The 30th Congress of the Confederation of Mediterranean European Mycology (CEMM 2024) brought together researchers, mycologists, and enthusiasts from across the world in the coastal town of Benicàssim, Spain. Despite a week of persistent rain and the tragic impact of the DANA storm in the Valencia region, the congress successfully delivered a rich scientific and cultural program—demonstrating both resilience and strong international collaboration in the field of mycology.
A Congress Marked by Resilience
Organized by the Valencian Mycological Society (SOMIVAL), CEMM 2024 took place from October 27 to November 2, 2024. While adverse weather conditions posed logistical challenges, nearly all scheduled activities were carried out. Field excursions, cultural visits, and scientific sessions continued with minimal disruption, highlighting the commitment of both organizers and participants.
The congress coincided with the devastating DANA weather event, which heavily impacted the l’Horta Sud region of Valencia and resulted in significant loss of life. The congress community expressed sincere condolences and solidarity with those affected, marking a moment of reflection during the event.
International Participation and Collaboration
A total of 165 participants from seven countries—France, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Algeria, Mexico, and Spain—attended the congress. Spanish participants represented multiple regions, reinforcing the event’s role as a hub for international exchange and collaboration in Mediterranean mycology.
Fieldwork and Biodiversity Highlights
One of the core elements of CEMM 2024 was the fieldwork conducted in three major Natural Parks in Castellón province:
- Sierra de Espadán
- Desert de les Palmes
- Penyagolosa
Despite the challenging weather, participants successfully documented an impressive 464 fungal taxa, showcasing the region’s exceptional biodiversity and ecological richness. These Mediterranean habitats continue to be of high scientific interest due to their diverse ecosystems and fungal species.
Adapted Program and Cultural Activities
While one field trip had to be canceled due to heavy rainfall, most excursions were completed, with transportation provided by the organizers. A planned visit to Valencia city was unfortunately not possible due to road closures, but alternative cultural and leisure activities were arranged at the hotel. Participants also visited the modernist villas of Benicàssim, adding a cultural dimension to the scientific program.
All-in-One Congress Experience
Participants stayed at the Hotel Intelier Orange, where all congress activities—including scientific sessions, laboratory work, specimen classification, exhibitions, and presentations—were hosted in a single location. This centralized setup created an efficient and collaborative environment, enhancing the overall experience.
More Than a Scientific Event
Beyond its academic contributions, CEMM 2024 served as a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and the promotion of mycological research in Mediterranean ecosystems. It also highlighted the cultural and historical value of the region, connecting science with local heritage.
The congress was supported by ASMICAS (Mycological Association of Castellón), the Benicàssim Town Council, the Castellón Provincial Council, and the Generalitat Valenciana.
