SOMICAN
Sociedad Micológica Cántabra
Our story begins more than three decades ago with a small group of six or seven friends who were passionate about mycology. Led by our late president, Alberto Pérez Puente, they met almost every Monday in Santander—sometimes in bars, other times in private homes—with a simple yet fascinating goal: to discuss their weekend discoveries and debate the classification of the collected species. As the group grew and their knowledge expanded, the need to establish a formal association and find a permanent headquarters became clear. Finally, after drafting the bylaws, the association was officially registered on November 12, 1986, and the Cantabrian Mycological Society (SOMICAN) was founded. Today, the Cantabrian Mycological Society has nearly 200 members. We remain committed to our founding objective: the study and dissemination of mycology. We regularly organize workshops, courses, field trips, and other nature-related activities.
